As a sculptor, Konstantin Achkov draws inspiration from biological forms, structures, and constructions. His fascination with "tensegrity" structures led him to create the Electron Chair. This project showcases his expertise in mastering space forms and puzzle structures. Achkov aimed not only for innovation in production technology, joints, and assembly but also for a memorable vision of symmetrical forms that had not been used before. The Electron Chair represents more of a modern plastic art than a standard four-legged chair.
The Electron Chair is a flat-pack, puzzle chair that easily transforms from a stool into a chair. Its backside is stuck into the base and locks with the help of unique joints. This design allows for a very compact flat pack and makes assembly extremely easy. The chair's innovative shape sets it apart from traditional chairs, while its construction ensures exceptional strength.
Production of the Electron Chair is based on minimal operations using CNC cutting routers. All the details are nested in one sheet of 18mm plywood, resulting in a streamlined production process that includes CNC cutting, finishing, and packaging. This efficient production method allows for consistent quality and reduces waste.
The dimensions of the Electron Chair are 504/514/820 mm, and it weighs 6.5 kg. It comes in a flat-pack box measuring 660/530/115 mm, making it easy to transport and store.
When it comes to assembly, the end user can purchase the chair in a compact flat pack with a specially designed handle. Following the instructions and using the included wooden instrument, the user can choose to assemble it as a stool or transform it into a chair by adding the back. The chair provides both comfort and ergonomic support, thanks to the textile sitting and back and the strong construction.
The Electron Chair project started in 2014 with the development of the first prototype. After gaining recognition in numerous magazines, the design was further refined by separating the back elements from the stool. The first prototype was showcased at One Design Week 2014 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
Konstantin Achkov conducted extensive research to achieve user-friendly assembly, maintain the strength of the construction, and create a compact flat pack. The designer explored various puzzle CNC cut joints and tested the qualities of plywood to bend and withstand pressure. The result is a set of completely new and original snap joints that are compact, easy to use, and visually appealing. The separation of the back from the base also allowed for a smaller and more compact flat pack. Additionally, the comfort and ergonomics of the chair are enhanced by the textile membranes used for the seat and back.
The Electron Chair has received recognition for its innovative design. In 2016, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category. This prestigious award is bestowed upon outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that contribute to quality of life improvements.
The Electron Chair is a testament to the fusion of art, engineering, and ergonomics. Its unique design, innovative assembly, and compact flat pack make it a standout piece of furniture that combines functionality and aesthetics.
